What is the purpose of the law in the life of a Christian? The work of the law is to expose sin, but in Christ we’ve been justified and set free from the power of sin and are no longer subject to the penalty that the law demands. Therefore, as we walk in Christ’s love, the law does not apply to us. And even when we stumble and give in to old desires, the law comes to remind us of God’s righteous standard and reveal our remaining corruption, but it does not come with the threat of judgment, nor does the believer see it as a means of restoration with God. So how should we respond when we fall short of God’s standard? Praise Him for the grace granted us in Christ Jesus. Remember the impossible burden of perfectly keeping the law and appreciate anew the work accomplished for us at the cross. And then in the power that His Spirit provides, use your freedom to walk in the newness of life which is ours in union with Christ.
