Communion: Do this in Remembrance of Me, Part 2
Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Special Topic Topic: Communion Passage: 1 Corinthians 11:23–33
What is the purpose of Communion? If you’ve been a Christian for long, you’ve probably noticed differences in how various churches and denominations conduct the Lord’s Supper. In one denomination the ceremony is elaborate, rich with details that convey reverence and solemnity. In another, their practice reflects a humble simplicity. Yet when we turn to the Scriptures for guidance, we find Paul’s greatest concern is not the outward form, but the hearts of those who partake. Paul rebuked the Corinthians not for any aspect of how the elements were presented, but for the selfish and profane manner in which they were taken. Communion is a time for remembering Christ’s substitutionary on our behalf, and for regularly proclaiming the gospel as we wait for the Lord’s return. It reminds us of our responsibility to walk in obedience, to maintain short accounts with God as we keep our hearts soft through regular repentance, and to rejoice as time and again we reverently and gratefully remember the cost of our redemption and the joy we will have when that redemption is fully realized.
