Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, Part 2

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Matthew Passage: Matthew 5:3

The world finds its treasure in temporal adornments that appeal to its lusts for wealth, power, pleasure, and influence. These build up the natural man’s love for himself, fortifying his misplaced confidence in the flesh. But these are not what Christ called blessings. He did not extol the virtues of strength and self-confidence, nor did He urge us to pursue prosperity, ease, or applause. On the contrary, Jesus opened the door to genuine blessing by showing us the wretchedness of our own sin. We are blessed when we realize our true spiritual condition, and understand that we have no hope of changing on our own because we are poor in spirit. How do you know if you’re blessed? Have you been weaned from seeking your own way, do you see God’s goodness in every situation, and are you mindful of your constant need for His grace and mercy? These are evidences of His work, and the mark of His blessing. To fill your hands with the infinite riches of God’s grace, you must first let go of your worthless man-made trinkets.
