The Temptation of Christ, Part 2

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Matthew Passage: Matthew 4:1–4:11

Was it possible for Jesus to sin? If we say yes, we risk denying His Deity. If we say no, we question the genuineness of His humanity. What’s more, if Jesus relied upon His Deity, then He did not face temptation as we do, and He would not be a truly sympathetic High Priest. So what’s the answer to this difficult theological knot? Jesus in His Deity was not able to sin, and Jesus in His perfect humanity was able not to sin because He would not turn from God. When hungry, He rested in God’s Word. When tempted to act contrary to faith, He rested in God’s plan. What can we learn from this? Look to Christ! See how your Mediator, the perfect God-Man, resisted sin. He submitted Himself in perfect trust to the Father, and by His life and death Jesus has taught and empowered us to walk as He did. Though we will stumble, yet by His power we will prevail. Place your hope and trust in God, and He will give you the power to resist evil.
