Believing himself to be basically good, the rich young ruler asked Jesus what righteous work he could do to secure eternal life. Jesus cited God’s perfect standard in the law, and still the young man failed to see his plight. When Jesus told him to abandon his wealth, the young man's idolatrous heart was fully exposed as he walked away. Can you possess great wealth and still follow Christ? Of course. But you can’t follow Christ if your wealth possesses you.
