What Jesus Thinks of Loveless Orthodoxy

Pastor: Pastor Eric Borgstrom Series: Special Topic Topic: Love Passage: Revelation 2:1–7

Many Christians idealize the early Church, believing it was more faithful and pure than churches are today. But the opening chapters of the book of Revelation tell a different, and yet familiar story. There was much to commend: endurance in the face of persecution, deeds of faithfulness and love, and a devotion to the truth of God’s Word. However, there was also much to criticize: materialism, weak faith, and toleration of the worst kinds of sin and error. Even for the Ephesian church, which Paul had once commended for their faith in God and concern for the saints, Christ had a devastating warning. They had left their first love. The Ephesians were devoted to the teaching and defense of the Word of God, but they had come to equate orthodoxy and doctrinal fidelity with love and righteousness. They began to love the fight for truth more than the people it was intended to save and transform. Sound theology is a necessary foundation for genuine love, but love for Christ, His Church, and the lost is where your theology is proven.
