Superiority of the Sacrifice of Christ

Pastor: Matt Johnston Series: Special Topic Topic: Salvation Passage: Hebrews 10:1–18

In what sense is the sacrifice of Christ better? It is the culmination of God’s redemptive plan, and the glorious reality to which the Old Covenant sacrificial system pointed. Unlike the animal sacrifices of the Levitical priesthood, Christ’s death was a one-time event, a unique and fully efficacious death that never need be repeated. It has the power to save to the uttermost, cleansing us completely and forevermore, dealing with sin at the heart level, placing us in a position of perfect righteousness, and allowing us to call Him Father who was once our fearsome Judge. His sacrifice doesn’t provide the mere possibility or hope of salvation, but the certain reality of it, offered by the consummate and perfect High Priest who had no sin of His own for which He must first atone. Certainly these truths can help us have full assurance of eternal life, but how can they help us battle sin here and now? Resist the temptation to trivialize the gospel or treat it as common, and refuse to embrace the sins that cost the dearest blood.
