A Time to Fast

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Matthew Topic: Tradition Passage: Matthew 9:14–17

We all have traditions that influence our spiritual practices. We develop customs that guide us in the details of our worship services, lead us to pray in a particular manner, or determine how often we celebrate Communion. Our practices can become part of our identity and be so dear to us that we are even tempted to view them as necessary to godliness. Traditions are fine, but when we equate them with righteousness, we’ve crossed the line. Such was the case when the Pharisees and John’s disciples saw Christ dining with sinners at a time when tradition demanded fasting. Scripture did not command this fast, and therefore Jesus was not in violation of God’s commands. When asked why he wasn’t following custom, the Savior’s answer was telling. His disciples were with the Bridegroom and had no reason to mourn; and He came to establish new practices, not build on the practices of men. We must do whatever Scripture commands, but whatever we do for His honor that has not been commanded must be held loosely, lest we create unnecessary division.
