Your Greatest Enemy in a Trial

Pastor: Pastor Eric Borgstrom Series: Special Topic Passage: James 1:13–15

Trials bring pressures to bear on our heart that test the quality of our faith. Any difficulty we’re facing will either strengthen us as we trust God, or weaken us as we respond in sin. How can you find encouragement in the midst of trials? Guard your heart from self-will and unbelief. Abstain from the fleshly inclination to blame God for your troubles. He has ordained your circumstances, but He has also provided you with the way of escape so that you can always respond righteously. Acknowledge the Lord’s character. Hardship produces spiritual fruit in us that could never spring forth from a life of only ease and prosperity. Accept your culpability. The world may believe that our environment teaches us to do evil, but we know that sin resides in the heart of every man. Abort the trajectory of sin. Christian maturity isn’t marked by a lack of temptation, but by the practice of obedience. When we embrace these safeguards, we’ll learn to prize the fruit of trials even more than the relief of their ending.
