The Lord's Prayer, Part 3

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Matthew Passage: Matthew 6:9–15

When Jesus instructed His disciples on prayer, He told them to ask God for their daily bread. Many have read their own theological biases into this passage, resulting in a myriad of different interpretations. Some have suggested that when Jesus mentions bread that He is referring the Lord’s Supper, while others maintain that bread must refer to the Word of God, or even to Jesus Himself. While these various ideas are all creative, they are also obviously wrong. The meaning of the Scriptures is intended to be clear and accessible. It doesn’t require our creativity, nor does it need to be sifted through our theological grid in order to reveal its treasures. What are we to pray for? Our daily food. Why pray for something we must work for to acquire? Prayer is a humble acknowledgement that God is the One who enables us to acquire our daily provisions, that our security is in Him and not in the abundance of our storehouse, and that our pressing need is to cultivate thankfulness in hearts often prone to indifference.
