Identifying Merciful Providence

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Ruth Passage: Ruth 2:1–23

In the midst of a painful trial, the mercies of God can be difficult to see. We wonder why He would allow us to suffer, and may even question His sovereign care for us. Certainly Naomi wrestled with these thoughts as she struggled to make sense of the dark providence delivered by God’s hand. Yet even before Naomi had eyes to see it, evidences of His mercy were already at work to bring her safely home. God had allowed her to hear that the famine was over, and even offered her companions so she would not be alone. He drew her back to Israel during the time of the harvest when both food and work were available, and then provided amply for her through Boaz and his marriage to Ruth. We often miss God’s small and continual expressions of mercy because we’re only looking for the end of our trial. Are you walking through a dark providence? If so, you’ve just found God’s mercy to you in hearing the truth. Will you trust Him by faith, or turn away?
