Christ and Moses, Part 4

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Matthew Passage: Matthew 5:17–5:20

Jesus upheld a high regard for God’s Law, and expanded our understanding of its demands on us, proclaiming that even our secret thoughts are measured against God’s perfect and undiluted standard of righteousness. He did not abolish or diminish God’s standard, but simply distilled it down to its essence of godly love. This love of God is not to be confused with the selfish and fleeting affection we place on those things and people who gratify our flesh. No, godly love is willing to bear great sacrifice for the good of another, and doesn’t fail to give a needed rebuke when a brother is walking in darkness. Given such a lofty standard, how can we have hope of eternal life? Praise God that Jesus Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone who believes! He who upheld and fulfilled the Law also met its demands for all who trust in Him by faith, and His righteousness is credited to our account so that our God looks upon us as if we have never violated His commands.
