Christ and Moses, Part 2

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Matthew Passage: Matthew 5:17–5:20

Jesus Christ came to fulfill the Law, not abolish it. So what does this mean? Are Christians bound to keep the Law, or does faith in Christ leave no room for concern about keeping the commandments of God? Certainly, we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and not by our own pitiful efforts at righteousness. Yet how can the Moral Law be nullified since it is rooted in the perfect and unchanging character of God? Jesus was not concerned about the external forms of the Law. His intent was to uphold and protect its essential moral principles, and to keep us walking in godliness while also freeing us from the bondage of the Law. By faith in Christ we are reckoned as righteous, and through faith in Christ we press on in obedience to God from the heart. The aim of our obedience is not justification, but to live out the love that has been shed abroad in our hearts by loving others as we love ourselves. This is how we fulfill the Law of Christ.
