Principles for Being Godly in the Workplace

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Ephesians Passage: Ephesians 6:9

How can Twenty-First Century Christians understand and apply Paul’s exhortation to First Century slaves and masters? Remember that slavery in the ancient world was not quite the same as the racially-driven practice in America. Ancient slaves were often captured in war, or were enslaved to pay a debt. They could be trained to become professionals such as doctors and teachers, and most were eventually emancipated after age thirty. In any case, the subject Paul has in view isn’t necessarily slavery, but how Christians conduct themselves in the world of work. Christian workers should respect their employer, work cheerfully and diligently, expecting to be rewarded by the Lord if not by their employer. Christian employers are to demonstrate that same good character toward their employees. They are to be a godly example, seeking to do good to their workers, never threatening or taking advantage of them. For most of us, work is the means that God has provided so that we can earn a living. It is His gracious gift, and part of His righteous design.
