The Christian's Life-long Practice of Repentance and Faith

Pastor: Matthew Phillips Series: Special Topic Passage: 1 John 1:5–1:10

1 John was written to affirm the truth, confront error, and assure believers of their salvation in Christ. One pernicious error claimed that the Christian’s conduct had no bearing on his spiritual condition; a lie which is utterly inconsistent with the character of God and the content of the Scriptures. In response, the Apostle John provided tests for those uncertain of their security in Christ: our walk and our fellowship with God. When we are born again by God’s grace, we do not become sinless. But we do have a new desire to put off sin and practice godliness even though the struggle is long and difficult. When we stumble and our sin casts a shadow over our fellowship with God, we seek restoration through confession, agreeing with God’s settled Word and acknowledging our guilt. Have trials or besetting sins unsettled you? Do you doubt your salvation? Then repent and believe. Don’t trust in your works, your feelings, or the wisdom of man. Trust God’s sure and unchanging Word, so that your joy may be made full.
