Blessed are the Merciful

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Matthew Passage: Matthew 5:7

The mercy of God provokes two responses in the humble heart. The first is gratitude, because we know we’ve been pardoned from the just condemnation we deserve. The second is a desire to show the same mercy we’ve been granted. Though we’ve been forgiven of rebellion against God Himself, we sometimes resist showing mercy to others over infinitely lesser offenses. When we’ve been mistreated, we want justice. When our pride has been hurt, we want retribution. But God calls us to demonstrate mercy that flows out of a sacrificial love that produces forgiveness and patience. Mercy reveals God’s glory, and is to be exercised with delight. But mercy does more than withhold the execution of justice. It also lovingly tells the truth. Without seeking satisfaction or retribution, mercy confronts the erring brother, gives him opportunity to change, and implores him to be reconciled to God.
