Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, Part 1

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Matthew Passage: Matthew 5:3–5:3

The Sermon on the Mount is Christ’s masterpiece of exposition and moral instruction that both stuns and thrills the heart. His wise and gracious words search our motives, comforting us in our anxieties, challenging our cherished assumptions, and exposing our inwardly selfish and evil intentions. Jesus began His sermon with a series of blessings that we call the beatitudes, teaching us what it means to be truly happy and blessed. Contrary to the wisdom of the world, happiness does not consist in the number of our possessions or even the soundness of our health. Real and lasting joy comes only as we recognize God’s grace poured out in our lives, enjoy the assurance of our salvation, and have access to His abundant spiritual riches. Do you understand your abject spiritual poverty and moral bankruptcy apart from Jesus Christ? Are you blessed to know and love Him as your Lord and Savior? Then walk in Him as a holy and beloved child of God, rejoicing in your need and His lavish provision, and find your satisfaction completely in Him.
