The Last Supper

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: special service Passage: Matthew 26:14–26:30

Christ’s inauguration of the Lord’s Supper is rich with sovereign meaning, timing, and irony. The religious leaders were waiting for an opportunity to seize Christ by night and kill Him, and a game of cat and mouse ensued. In Christ’s final week, He and His disciples went into the city each day, and each night they left to avoid detection. On Thursday Jesus reached His goal. He used the Passover meal to usher in the New Covenant in His blood as He explained to His disciples that henceforth, they were to take the bread and the cup in remembrance of Him. In a providential twist, Jesus was able to partake of the sacrificial lamb on Thursday, and to be the true sacrificial Lamb of God on Friday, accomplishing both on the Passover due to a difference in how Jews in different parts of Israel reckoned time. Where is the irony in all of this? As Israel celebrated their deliverance from Egyptian bondage, they missed their ultimate deliverance in Messiah. Are you missing Christ in the midst of your religious traditions?
