The Genealogy of The King

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Matthew Passage: Matthew 1:1–1:17

The Gospel of Matthew is focused on the Kingship of Jesus Christ, and what it means to be a citizen of His Kingdom. Beginning with Jesus’ royal genealogy, Matthew shows that Jesus fulfills God’s promise to bless all the families of the Earth through Abraham, and to see Messiah rule eternally on the Throne of David. Christ as the Son of David is even built into the very structure of the genealogy, as Matthew organizes it and uses Hebraic numerology to symbolically underscore the truth that Jesus is of the root of Jesse. The genealogy of Messiah also displays God’s grace as Israel is preserved through the time of the patriarchs, monarchies, and deportation to Babylon; and four outcast women are included in Messiah’s royal line. More than a list of names, this genealogy is a witness of God’s grace, as He lifts up the broken and makes them useful, and sovereignly fulfills His prophetic Word in the minutest detail. Oh, outcast sinner, do you know this Jesus? Bow your knee and joyfully submit your heart and will to the King of glory and of grace!
