Living a Principled Life in an Unprincipled World, Part 4

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Ephesians Passage: Ephesians 4:25–5:2

It is easy to be flippant or careless with our words. Some turn every subject to crass ends, while others constantly look to do battle, build themselves up by criticizing others, or simply talk incessantly yet without saying very much at all that is useful. Paul calls Christians to stay away from such filthy, destructive, and useless talk. Rather, we are to speak in a manner that is edifying, appropriate, and gracious. Edifying speech builds up and makes strong, helping others to live more successfully or peacefully by warning the unruly or giving courage to the faint-hearted. Appropriate speech fits both the circumstances and the need of the moment, wisely giving the right solution at the proper time. Gracious speech imparts truth in a way that is compelling, making the way of wisdom both clear and attractive. How can you guard your tongue and practice such godly speech? Be careful not to speak your perceptions as truth, insincerely flatter, or seek your own glory. Instead, serve others by honoring and protecting them, with the aim of seeing them grow strong and mature in Christ by speaking the truth in love.
