Christ, Our Advocate

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: special service Passage: 1 John 2:1–2:2

We all fall short of God’s standard, and the judgment for our sin is death. Not even our greatest deeds could atone for the least of our sins, and there is no religious act or ritual we could perform that has the power to deliver us. Those who will confess and repent have a Savior in Jesus Christ, who took on flesh and perfectly obeyed the Law, and submitted to John’s baptism of repentance though He Himself knew no sin. With our sins credited to His account, Christ went to the cross and suffered the awesome fury of God’s wrath in our place. He perfectly met the demands of the Law for us with His life, and then fully atoned for our sin with His death, triumphing over death itself in His resurrection. He ascended to heaven and now intercedes as our Advocate, continually reminding the Father that our sin was paid for at the cross, and that we are covered by His spotless righteousness. Christ is the only propitiation for the sin of the world, the only One who can satisfy God’s perfect justice and justify His abundant grace. But this grace is only for the hopeless sinner who turn to Him by faith.
