The Office of Deacon

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Special Topic Passage: 1 Timothy 3:8–3:13

What exactly does a Deacon do in the Church? Is the Deacon a servant who meets needs, or a decision-maker who wields authority? Are only men able to fill the office of Deacon, or do the Scriptures also permit women to serve in that role? If our desire is to build the Church after the pattern that God has given, we must wrestle with these questions carefully. God's Word is clear that Deacons are servants in the Church, not leaders. They are responsible for meeting the physical needs of the local church body. The Bible is also clear that the office of Deacon is to be filled only by those whose lives evidence strong Christian character. We stand on these things without equivocation. But as to the question of female Deacons, since many good and faithful exegetes of the Scriptures differ on this issue, wisdom dictates that we be patient and cautious in the matter. Saving Grace Bible Church believes that the Scriptures permit women to serve as Deacons among other women, but that it is better to err on the side of limiting our liberties rather than pushing our freedoms.
