Working Out Salvation

Pastor: Pastor Eric Borgstrom Series: Special Topic Topic: Sanctification Passage: Philippians 2:12–13

Who is responsible for your sanctification, you or God? Paul says we must work out our salvation with fear and trembling. So if we don’t crucify the desires of the flesh and then strive to walk in the Spirit, we have only ourselves to blame when we fall into sin. On the other hand, when we do heed God’s Word and then grow as a result, we can only boast in the Lord. Reconciling biblical tensions like these may tax our limited understanding, but we must resist the urge to impose our own ideas and preferences upon the Word of God. We might not fully comprehend how such truths work together in harmony, but there is no mistaking God’s perfect ways in the result. Our responsibility to obey leaves no room for a passive approach to spiritual growth, and the fact that God’s sovereign hand is required ensures that He will rightly receive the glory. So what’s the answer? Simple. Embrace the hard work of sanctification wholeheartedly, and let your confidence be the certainty of God’s sovereign work in you.
