Christ’s Gifts: Equipping the Church

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Special Topic Topic: The Church Passage: Ephesians 4:7–11

Ephesians 4 makes clear that the Lord cares for the Church through faithful, spiritually qualified, and gifted leadership. The results of their ministry are believers who are regularly growing in love, spiritual stability, and Kingdom usefulness. The office of apostle was unique in Church history, as these men communicated to us the Word of God that is New Testament Scripture. Such men had to be physical eyewitnesses of the resurrected Christ, be personally appointed to their office by Christ, and authenticate this appointment through miraculous signs. The apostolic age came to a close after the completion of the Scriptures. New Testament prophets sometimes communicated revelation, and sometimes communicated what the apostles taught, but the revelatory nature of this office also ceased with the end of the apostolic age. Of course, evangelists proclaim the gospel, and pastor-teachers are charged with the task of rightly dividing and teaching the Word of God, and shepherding the flock. These men must be believers who live a godly life, are apt to teach, and are recognized in their giftedness and qualifications by other Church leaders.
