The first quality of a faithful heart is purity. Our whole life is lived under God’s watchful eye. He sees all, and knows our every thought and intention. Nothing is hidden from His view. But purity is more than external expressions of righteousness. It is the necessary inclination of the regenerated spirit, not merely fleshly and short-sighted attempts at reformation. Why strive for purity? Purity is the purpose of our election, and the goal of Christ’s redemptive work. To pursue holiness from the heart is to follow God out of love for His Person and character, and to demonstrate genuine devotion. When the internal desire for holiness wanes, so does spiritual growth. When there is no concern for purity, there should also be no assurance that we belong to Him at all. Christian, have you strayed into impurity? Then confess and repent, and find joy again. Sinner, do you see your need? Then entrust yourself to Christ and find peace. No sin is so great that He cannot forgive, and none too small that you should not confess.
