The Temptation of Christ

Pastor: Pastor Marc Wragg Series: Special Topic Passage: Matthew 4:1–4:11

The pursuit of Christ is inseparably linked with the knowledge of His Word, and it is realized as we learn objective biblical truth and submit ourselves to it. This runs counter to the popular worldly philosophy of sentimentality, which holds that truth is known better through feelings than intellectual examination. Sentimentality is narcissistic at its core, as it finds ultimate gratification in human emotion and exalts the individual’s will over the will of God. But how did Christ handle truth, especially in the heat of difficulty? Consider His temptation in the wilderness. Physically weakened and under relentless satanic attack, Christ countered temptation and refuted Satan’s lies and trickery with simple statements of scriptural truth. Like our Savior, we must draw near to the Father by believing His Word and trusting His character, not searching for comfort in our own passions and solutions. Faith is often accompanied by feelings, but it is never defined by them.
